The upcoming Windows 10 19H1 update during the spring of 2019 is likely to come with new customization options that would technically allow users to personalize more parts of the operating system.

All these tweaks would be included in a new setting which may be called “Choose your default Windows mode,” as Albatross discovered and tweeted recently.

This feature should essentially bring a visual overhaul to the Windows desktop, and it could push the operating system closer to some of the concepts that made the rounds lately.

“Just like the "Choose your default app mode", there will also be a "Choose your default Windows mode" option. This should change the color of elements like the taskbar and the tray flyouts, resulting in a light shell like the ones we've seen on concepts in the past years,” Albatross explains.

More changes on their way

You will be able to set the default shell and app modes individually, and these settings won’t depend on the configuration you make for the rest of the operating system.

If development advances as expected, this new mode should become available to users in the coming preview builds, ahead of the public launch for production devices in the spring of the next year.

Windows 10 19H1 is currently in preview stage and is available for insiders enrolled in the Fast and Skip Ahead rings. The debut is due to take place in April, after Microsoft signs off the RTM build and ships it for the final testing to Windows insiders in March.

In addition to this new mode, Windows 10 19H1 could also come with an updated volume flyout that includes playback controls and with Cortana separated from the Windows Search. These changes should soon become available for testing as part of the Windows Insider program.
