Windows 10 UPDATE: PC fans get another reason to upgrade to latest Microsoft OS

WINDOWS 10 may be the most recent flagship OS from Microsoft but it still isn’t the most popular - yet.

Windows 10 Pro: Business owner reveals benefits of upgrade

has this year been making great strides to overtake another piece of Microsoft software and become the most popular OS in the world.

Ever since Windows 10 came out it has been battling Windows 7 for the crown of the most popular desktop operating system.

And this year Windows 10 has made great strides, coming to within touching distance of Windows 7.

According to NetMarketShare, at the start of 2018 Windows 10 had a 34.29 per cent share of the OS market compared to Windows 7’s 42.39 per cent chunk.

But in October this was closed right down, with Windows 10 on 38.28 per cent and Windows 7 on 39.35 per cent.

As Windows 10 reaches the crossover point with Windows 7 PC fans have been given another reason to upgrade to the latest version of Microsoft’s OS.

Microsoft in November patched out a zero-day vulnerability that affected older versions of its OS - specifically Windows 7 and Server 2008.

The newer, flagship Windows 10 software was not affected - underlining the benefits of using the most recent, up-to-date OS available.

The threat was discovered by Kaspersky Lab, who outlined the dangers of the vulnerability in a blog post.

They explained when exploited the vulnerability would allow an attacker to install programmes, create new user accounts and view or alter data.

In their blog post, Kaspersky Lab said: “In October 2018, our Automatic Exploit Prevention (AEP) systems detected an attempt to exploit a vulnerability in Microsoft’s Windows operating system.

“Further analysis revealed a zero-day vulnerability in win32k.sys. The exploit was executed by the first stage of a malware installer in order to gain the necessary privileges for persistence on the victim’s system.

“So far, we have detected a very limited number of attacks using this vulnerability.

“The victims are located in the Middle East.”

While speaking to Bleeping Computer, Kaspersky Lab added: “According to Kaspersky Lab experts, there is no clear insight as to which actor(s) may be behind the attacks.

“However, the developed exploit is being used by at least one APT actor.”

If an attacker attempts to exploit the vulnerability on machines running the latest security update it caused the system in question to crash.

In other Windows 10 news Express.co.uk recently reported that PC users are being alerted to a brand new bug.

First spotted by Windows Latest, the latest problems appear to be affecting Windows 10 fans who still watch content via the Windows Media Player.

Once the latest Windows 10 update is installed it seems the Seek Bar stops working.

Microsoft is clearly aware that this upgrade has caused a fault with a message posted on their support page saying: “After installing this update, users may not be able to use the Seek Bar in Windows Media Player when playing specific files.

“Microsoft is working on a resolution and will provide an update in an upcoming release.”
