The update caused fatal crashes on the Surface Book 2

Microsoft has recently decided to pull a cumulative update that was causing fatal crashes on devices like the company’s very own Surface Book 2.

Windows 10 cumulative update KB4467682 was released on November 27 with lots of improvements, what the changelog did not include was an issue discovered by users shortly after the installation and pushing their devices to a BSOD happening at random times.

Microsoft acknowledged the bug earlier this week and provided a workaround to resolve the BSOD, recommending users to uninstall the cumulative update and wait for an official fix.

Now it looks like Microsoft has pulled the cumulative update completely and Windows 10 version 1803 can no longer download it from Windows Update or the Microsoft Update Catalog.

“After installing this optional update some users have reported getting a blue or black screen with error code, “System thread exception not handled.” As a precaution, we have removed this optional update from Windows Update and Microsoft Update Catalog to protect customers. Fixes and improvements will be available in the December 2018 security update release and will include a resolution for this issue,” Microsoft explains.

A fix is expected next week on Patch Tuesday

The issue is now expected to be fixed next week as part of the monthly Patch Tuesday cycle when cumulative updates will be released for all Windows 10 versions on the market.

Users who have already installed cumulative update KB4467682 are recommended to remove it if they are hitting the bugs described above. Otherwise, if everything is working correctly, they can just wait for the next cumulative update rollout that will bring further improvements anyway.

The BSOD glitch impacted Surface Book 2 devices running Windows 10 version 1803 (April 2018 Update), and there were no reports of similar fatal crashes happening on other devices or Windows 10 versions after installing KB4467682.
