Would You Have Sex With a Robot?

A survey from dating site SaucyDates.com asked both men and women that question and found that over a quarter of online daters would give AI a try in the bedroom.

We've gotten very comfortable with artificial intelligence. But are we ready to get intimate with it?

The Why Axis Bug Companies like Abyss Creations, which makes the really realistic sex dolls RealDoll, have started to imbue their silicone women (and sometimes men) with AI, sensors, heaters, and robotics to stimulate by simulating. Sex robots haven't started to ship yet but they will soon and when they do, the relationship between AI and humans will forever be changed.

Dating site SaucyDates.com endeavors to connect real humans, but perhaps faced with constant feedback on how that can fail, it asked its members whether they'd have sex with an AI-powered robot. Thirty-one percent of men and 26 percent of women who responded said that they would. One 44-year-old woman from Seattle who was surveyed said, "Eliminate relationships and still have good sex. Hmm."

Sex robots won't eliminate relationships, though. If anything, they can make relationships more complicated. Issues such as consent and even family dynamics will still come into play, and like any AI that comes into the world, we'll have to further investigate what it means to be human to navigate it.

About Chandra Steele

Senior Features Writer

My title is Senior Features Writer, which is a license to write about absolutely anything if I can connect it to technology (I can). I’ve been at PCMag since 2011 and have covered the surveillance state, vaccination cards, ghost guns, voting, ISIS, art, fashion, film, design, gender bias, and more. You might have seen me on TV talking about these topics or heard me on your commute home on the radio or a podcast. Or maybe you’ve just seen my Bernie meme

I strive to explain topics that you might come across in the news but not fully understand, such as NFTs and meme stocks. I’ve had the pleasure of talking tech with Jeff Goldblum, Ang Lee, and other celebrities who have brought a different perspective to it. I put great care into writing gift guides and am always touched by the notes I get from people who’ve used them to choose presents that have been well-received. Though I love that I get to write about the tech industry every day, it’s touched by gender, racial, and socioeconomic inequality and I try to bring these topics to light.

Outside of PCMag, I write fiction, poetry, humor, and essays on culture.
