Apple Watch debuted back in 2015 and has since become the best-selling wearable around.

The Cupertino-based firm's hardware has since been refreshed every year after its initial release.

Apple Watch Series 3 represented one of the largest upgrades for the product line thanks to its inclusion of cellular connectivity.

Such a feature allowed users to make phone calls on the product without the need for an iPhone.

The functionality also carried over to the Apple Watch Series 4 that presented a radical redesign for the wearable.

Series 4 debuted alongside the iPhone Xs, Xs Max and XR at Apple's hardware event in September.

The product radically reduced bezels to present customers with an all-screen design and also introduced new health features.

Although the Apple Watch has long established itself as one of the best wearables on the market, it has recently cemented its usefulness further.

Amanda Antonio was driving through Florida at around 4am local time (9am GMT) on New Year's Day and, shortly after she was cut off by another car, lost control of her vehicle.

The automobile reportedly flipped repeatedly and landed in a ditch full of water and mud, as noted by Spectrum News.

Antonio said she was unable to immediately locate her phone as her car started to to fill with water and resorted to using her Apple Watch to search for her phone and call the authorities for help.

The call between Ms Antonio and the police has since been released.

Speaking to the authorities, the driver said: "Hi, I've been in a car accident. My car is flipped and I can't see anything and there's water getting in the car. I can't get out."

Ms Antonio was then asked how high the water was and replied: "It's up to my waist.

"It's up to my chin now."

She went on: "I'm freezing. I'm so scared."

Police shortly arrived at the scene of the incident and were able to safely remove Ms Antonio from the vehicle in question.

The Apple Watch offers a ping feature that allows owners to locate their iPhone.

The function works by forcing the smartphone to make a noise so the user can find where it has been placed.

It is assumed Ms Antonio used such a feature after the car accident.
