Microsoft has become very committed to providing its customers with full access to the company’s apps and services regardless of the platform they choose, and if this involves Apple’s macOS, there’s absolutely no problem.

As a result, Microsoft is occasionally rolling out updates aimed at Apple users connecting to its services, and today marks another important milestone in this approach.

The software giant has started rolling out OneDrive Files On-Demand on macOS, with the first devices getting it as we speak.

OneDrive Files On-Demand is one particular Windows 10 highlight, as it allows users to keep their devices in sync with data stored in the cloud. With Files On-Demand, OneDrive doesn’t download the full cloud content, but instead uses placeholders to allow quick browsing and low bandwidth usage.

Whenever users try to open files, OneDrive Files On-Demand automatically downloads the necessary content, so no full sync is necessary.

No official announcement just yet

The feature first debuted on Windows 8, but Microsoft surprisingly removed it when rolling out Windows 10. However, as one of the most requested features, the company had a change of mind and decided to bring back this feature in the latest version of its operating system.

However, Microsoft now wants to go a step further, so in addition to Windows 10, it’s making OneDrive Files On-Demand available elsewhere too, including here Apple’s macOS devices.

For the time being, there’s no official announcement regarding the rollout of OneDrive Files On-Demand on Apple machines, but expect the company to share more details in the coming days. A preview of the feature was released in September 2018, so there’s a chance that Microsoft completed the testing process and is now pushing the stable version to all devices.

We have reached out to the company to ask for more information regarding the macOS rollout and will update the article when an answer is provided.
