Windows 10 is Microsoft's computer operating system that typically receives substantial updates twice a year.

In 2018 the software was upgraded in April and October and it is presumed Microsoft will follow a similar timeline this year.

Before new iterations of the operating system are delivered to all users, the American tech giant offers a look at forthcoming features through its Windows Insider Programme.

The Windows Insider Programme is an initiative fans can sign up to that offers early builds of new Windows 10 versions.

While the software brings new additions, it is worth noting more bugs are usually present overall.

Microsoft recently announced its newest Windows 10 Insider preview build that brings a number of notable changes for fans to look forward to.

First of all, the Redmond-based company is "decoupling" its search bar and Cortana, its virtual assistant.

That means instead of being able to use either as part of the same tool, the search bar will exist for queries the user wants to type while the helper will be able to recognise voice commands when a separate toggle is pressed.

Microsoft insisted the change was made to "enable each experience to innovate independently".

The tech giant went on: "Going forward, we’ll be decoupling Search and Cortana in the taskbar.

"This will enable each experience to innovate independently to best serve their target audiences and use cases.

"Some Insiders have had this update for a few weeks now, and we appreciate all the feedback we’ve received about it so far! For those new to this update, when it rolls out to you, you’ll find clicking the search box in the taskbar now launches our experience focused on giving you the best in house search experience and clicking the Cortana icon will launch you straight into our voice-first digital assistant experience."

Moreover, the company declared the settings menu for each function has now been separated, too.

Microsoft has also insisted it is working to improve the reliability of its signature Start menu.

It explained it is working to make it better by creating a new process for it on the software's back end.

Discussing the repercussions of such a move, the tech giant said: "This has a number of benefits, including simplifying debugging and insulating Start from potential issues impacting other surfaces.

"This has been running as an experiment for a few weeks now and we’ve seen measurable improvements in the reliability amongst those that have the change, so we’re rolling it out to everyone."

Furthermore, Microsoft also noted it has introduced a new system to make font management easier for fans.

It went on: "Insiders today can now drag and drop font files from File Explorer into the modern Settings > Fonts page to install them.

"After installation, click on the font in the Font page, to view the different font faces associated with the font and all the details of the font.

Finally, the American tech giant insisted it is making the Windows Insider Programme settings page easier to navigate thanks to the removal of clutter.

All the new features discussed above are available in the Windows 10 Insider preview build 18317 which is rolling out right now.
