Intel has unveiled plans for a multibillion-euro investment that could add new manufacturing facilities of almost twice the size of the Dundrum Town Centre to its campus at Leixlip in Kildare.

The US microchip maker has just lodged plans for an entirely new factory spanning 110,000 sq m — or almost 1.2m sq ft — in addition to an already approved plan for a facility of almost the same scale. The company filed the fresh planning application last week following weeks of speculation that large-scale investment was imminent in Leixlip.

Eamonn Sinnott, general manager of Intel Ireland, confirmed the company was planning for a further significant expansion beyond one already approved by planners in 2017. That permission is for almost 90,000 sq m of manufacturing
