Apple Set To Unveil TV Service To Rival Netflix At Star-Studded Event: Here's All You Need To Know

Following
This article is more than 5 years old.

A new Apple News subscription service, an Apple TV subscription service to challenge Netflix, upgraded AirPods if not actually AirPods 2, the fabled AirPower wireless charging pad and a new iPad, or even two iPads and an iPod touch are among the delights predicted for the Apple special event which seems increasingly likely to happen on Monday, March 25 (though, as ever, nothing is set until Apple confirms it).

Apple

Details of what the News service might entail and how Apple is ruffling feathers by reportedly charging 50% of a $9.99-a-month subscription fee are considered in the post you can read on Forbes here.

But now, each day brings more details of what a TV streaming service would look like, when it will go live, and how much it will cost.

Here's what we know so far.

Apple

Why announce it now?

Apple has been clear that services are the future, delivering extra value to those Apple iPhones, iPads and Macs, for instance. Apple Music has been a big success, so why not find other subscription services like magazines, TV programmes and video games?

All are believed to be in the works but the upcoming event is a great chance to showcase the future.

We've been told already that Apple is getting into making TV content and that means that a preview of some of the content will be a great way to tease interest ahead of the service going live.

Apple

Which will be when, exactly?

It's not clear, though to my mind there's still a lot to be done, finishing shows, building the content, doing deals with networks, producers and more. CNBC reckons it will be soon, like April or early May.

That's certainly Apple's modus operandi, to announce now and release soon after, so that's possible. But my guess is that the fall is just as likely. Summer has been suggested but, you know, there's a reason why the traditional networks start their new seasons later than that, avoiding holidays, for example. So, my money is it'll be soon or September.

How much will it cost?

A Netflix subscription costs from around $8 a month, Amazon's Prime Video and Hulu are similar. Given that Apple matched Spotify's $9.99 a month pricing when it launched Apple Music, something like that is likely.

But I suspect there's an angle you might not have heard about elsewhere: 4K. If you want to watch Netflix in 4K, you have to pay extra. My bet is that there will be no extra charge on Apple to see shows in the highest resolution, just as there's no surcharge on iTunes for 4K content over HD when it's available.

Where will I find it?

That's not quite clear but likely to be in the Apple TV app currently available on iPhone, iPad and Apple TV.

Apple

So, will I need Apple hardware to watch?

Maybe not. A month ago it was revealed at CES in Las Vegas that the Apple iTunes app was being added to select smart TVs including some from Samsung. So perhaps an app for Apple TV will be released which will work on smart TVs or even an app for Android phones - Apple already makes an Apple Music app for those.

There is a rumor, however, that some content will be made available free to Apple product owners, so you might be able to watch some of the shows just by having an iPhone, iPad, Mac or iPod touch, for instance.

This is only a rumor, though, and I'd say it seems more likely that the content will be exclusive to those paying the monthly subscription.

Apple

Will it only be Apple programming?

Probably not, just as you'll find movies and series that aren't Netflix originals on that platform, say. It seems probable that there will be other channels in the Apple TV app - which is where you'll already find Amazon Prime Video - such as HBO. Some rumors say HBO is not yet locked in.

What are the shows?

There are plenty of upcoming titles we know about. These include a drama about a TV morning show starring Jennifer Aniston, Reese Witherspoon and Steve Carrell, a movie starring Bill Murray and directed by Sofia Coppola and a new Peanuts show.

Am I the only one most looking forward to seeing Snoopy, Charlie Brown and Pigpen again?

There's plenty more to look forward to, including a TV series of the Terry Gilliam movie Time Bandits.

There's also a multi-year content deal with Oprah Winfrey that has previously been announced.

Star-studded, you say?

It's possible, or probable even, that some of the talent lined up in the shows which have been announced, will be there to introduce it. Rumors suggest Jennifer Garner, J.J. Abrams and others may be gracing the stage of the Steve Jobs Theater at Apple Park. No mention of whether Charlie Brown will attend.

When will we know more?

Assuming the rumor mill hasn't got it all wrong or there isn't a sudden change of heart on Apple's side, it's likely that 10AM Pacific on Monday, March 25 is when all will be revealed.
