Is 2019 the year of the “foldable” smartphone? It will be if Oppo has anything to say about it. Oppo’s latest patent reveals a foldable phone with no bezels and a unique pop-up camera. Rumor has it that Oppo will officially announce the device by the end of 2019.

Oppo recently filed a patent with the European Trade Mark and Design Network (TMDN). Oppo has not disclosed anything about the device’s specs, but their patent reveals a few interesting features. First, the device includes an incredibly streamlined design and appears to be bezel-less. Second, the phone includes a pop-up camera. The device includes two camera and a flash that can be used both when the phone is folded and unfolded.

Oppo’s design significantly differs from the Samsung Galaxy Fold. The Galaxy Fold incorporates a 7.3-inch QXGA+ Dynamic OLED screen and a 4.6-inch HD Super AMOLED cover display, but it is not bezel-less. The Galaxy Fold also features a total of six cameras. There is a 10-megapixel selfie camera on the cover, dual cameras on the front of the main display, and three cameras on the rear of the device.

Huawei is also expected to reveal their new folding smartphone the Mate X on February 24 at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona. We know very little about device, except that it will include a 7-nanometer Kirin 980 octa-core processor and a Balong 5000 5G modem. The Galaxy Fold will incorporate a 7nm 64-bit octa-core processor, 2GB of LPDDR4 memory, and 512GB of onboard storage. Hopefully we will soon hear more about the specs for Oppo’s foldable device.

Oppo also recently unveiled their 10x optical zoom smartphone camera system. They claim that a device with the new camera system will be available in the second business quarter of 2019. It is currently unclear what device they plan on releasing and where the device will be available for sale. Oppo currently sells products in Southeast Asia and various European countries. Perhaps the North American market will soon get a taste of all the innovative products Oppo is working on.
