Microsoft Poised to Release First Edge Insider Preview

Documentation for the Microsoft Edge Insider Preview has appeared online, suggesting that the first preview release is imminent.

The documentation, first spotted by The Walking Cat on Twitter, discusses two release channels for the coming browser, Microsoft Edge Canary and Microsoft Edge Dev, mimicking the multi-channel build system used by Chromium (which also has Beta and Stable channels). It’s aimed at troubleshooting the initial install of the browser as well as later updates.

The biggest and perhaps only revelation here is that the Edge Insider Preview may be limited to just 64-bit versions of Windows 10, at least at first. It’s expected to run on 32- and 64-bit versions of Windows 7, 8.1, and 10 eventually.

“Microsoft Edge Insider builds are currently only available on Windows 10 (64-bit),” the documentation explains. “Other versions of Windows are not supported at this time.”

The documentation points to a frequently asked questions (FAQ) page, too. But that is unfortunately unavailable at this time.

According to an internal Microsoft memo, the firm has expanded testing of Edge Canary to a much larger group inside the company. This, too, suggests that the release is imminent, and that Insiders could be getting a Canary or Beta version of the browser soon.

Looking forward to it. Not sure if it means anything but Chrome 73 is moving to the stable channel on/around March 13. (Version 74, as pictured above, is currently in the dev channel but will be moving to the beta channel at around that time.) I'm sure that Microsoft will be releasing Edge updates either simultaneously with or very closely behind the Chrome updates, but I don't know if the timing branch switch timing will play a roll in when they decide to offer it up to insiders?

Will this be offered to the existing Windows insiders, or will it be a separate program we will sign up for?

In reply to RonH:

My guess is offered separate from Windows Insider Program as Microsoft, from what's been reported here on Thurrott and elsewhere, intends for this new Chromium version of Edge to run on 7, 8.1, and 10.

In reply to RonH:

Microsoft has an seperate insiders page to sign up for Edge. It is over at microsoftedgeinsider.com. So far it looks like a sign up for notifications but it appears they will treat this as it's own thing.

How will one become an Edge Insider? Will you have to install an insider build of Windows, or will you be able to install it stand-alone?

In reply to jbinaz:

I think, since Microsoft plans on supporting this version of Edge on 7 and 8.1 as well as 10, it most likely will be a standalone browser installable like Chrome, Firefox, Opera, and so forth.

In reply to jbinaz:

They do have an Edge Insider page that you can sign up on (which is microsoftedgeinsider.com). I would guess that Microsoft handles the Chromium Edge as a stand alone installer.

If course there's no beta or especially stable channels. Why would they need those? /s

Still, it'll be interesting to see how it's coming along. Think they'll offer it to Insiders once they finish internal testing?
