Southern California Apple Store warning customers of fraudulent phone calls
Callers contacting Apple’s southern California retail store at The Americana at Brand shopping complex in Glendale are being warned of fraudulent phone calls being made claiming to be from the store.
As discovered on Thursday, Apple is now playing an automated voice recording to warn customers of the unsolicited callers posing as representatives of the store as part of a phishing scheme aimed at stealing customer information.
The recording encourages those who may have received one of the fraudulent calls to visit the FBI website for further information about cybercrime, and to contact Apple support if they require assistance in changing an Apple ID password.
Apple is aware that some customers are receiving unsolicited calls claiming to be from this Apple Store. If you receive an unsolicited call, you should not provide any information to the callers. For more information on cybercrime and ways to protect your computer, visit www.fbi.gov/investigate/cyber. Also, if you feel you have been a victim of fraud, please contact your local police. If you would like help changing your Apple ID password, please visit support.apple.com.
Apple hasn’t released any type of official statement about the apparent phishing scam, although store employees have likely been briefed to advise customers to contact the local authorities with any concerns they should have.
