There are plenty of rumors out there claiming that this year’s new iPhone will feature a triple camera setup. While we’ve seen a few mockups of how this might look, a new render is supposedly based on an inside scoop.

Based on information provided by members of the supply chain, the alleged design looks very similar to the camera placement on Huawei’s Mate 20 Pro handset.

The Mate 20’s three camera lens setup includes a main camera, 3x zoom telephoto, and ultra-wide angle lens. Samsung’s Galaxy A7 also boasts a three lens setup, one of which can take extremely high resolution 24MP images.

Currently, the iPhone XS devices boast two 12MP lenses. One of these is wide angle and the other is a telephoto lens with 2x optical zoom. Combined, they create the noted “bokeh” effect. It’s not clear exactly what a third lens would add to the new iPhone. One idea is that it could help with Apple’s augmented reality ambitions. It would do this by increasing the iPhone’s ability to determine the distance of a subject from the handset from different angles.

If Apple does go with a three camera lens setup for the new iPhone, we’d expect them to be doing plenty of prototyping of different lens arrangements. This would be both to achieve the best photographic results, but also to maintain an appearance that’s aesthetically pleasing.

What would you think of this particular configuration? Leave your thoughts in the comments below.
