Panasonic made a big splash at Photokina with its decision to enter the competitive full-frame mirrorless camera space. It vowed not to abandon its support for existing customers who use Panasonic equipment with the Micro Four Thirds lens mount.

Today it announced its first new Micro Four Thirds camera since joining the L-Mount Alliance. The Lumix G95 inherits many of the tech features from the G9, but puts it in a more affordable package. The G9 debuted at $1,699, but the G95 will sell for $1,199.

You'll still get a 20MP Micro Four Thirds image sensor, without an optical low-pass filter and with 5-axis stabilization. The camera supports 9fps burst shooting—6fps with continuous focus—using Panasonic's DFD contrast detection focus system. Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are included for wireless image transfer.

The body is styled like an SLR, though this is a mirrorless camera. It features a swing-out 3-inch LCD, a 2,360k-dot OLED viewfinder. It only has one SDXC slot, a downgrade from the dual slots included with the G9. Panasonic still seals the camera to protect it from dust and splashes.

Panasonic Lumix G 14-140mm

Panasonic is known for its prowess with video, and the G95 has some nice features for its price. It records at 4K resolution at 24 or 30fps, and at 1080p at up to 60fps at normal speed and up to 120fps in slow motion. Serious videographers will be happy to see the flat V-Log L profile included, and if you use an external recorder the G95 can feed it a clean 4:2:2 8-bit signal. (And yes, there's a 3.5mm microphone input, as well as a headphone jack to monitor audio.)

The video system is also leveraged for imaging. The G95 uses Panasonic's 4K Photo mode to snap 8MP JPG images at up to 30fps. This can be combined with multiple focus points for macro work, or you can combine shots in sequence to show the motion of a subject moving through the frame.

The G95 is being sold as a body only. Panasonic is also updating one of its Micro Four Thirds lenses today (above), but it will be sold separately. The new Lumix G Vario 14-140mm f/3.5-5.6 II ASPH. Power O.I.S. also features dust and splash protection, as well as a focus motor that can keep up with modern, high-speed cameras. It's priced at $599.

Both the new lens and the Lumix G95 go on sale next month.
