Apple May Replace Your Apple Watch Series 2 In Need Of Repair With Series 3

Owners of Apple Watch Series 2 wearables that are sent for repair may find that they receive an Apple Watch Series 3 instead, at least for the time being.

According to an internal document that was sent to Apple Stores and Authorized Service Providers, a temporary shortage of parts means that Apple is handing out upgraded watches instead of repairing old ones.

MacRumors was able to get its hands on the document which also points out that the Apple Watch Series 3 requires an iPhone that can support watchOS 4 or later. That in turn means that owners of the iPhone 5 or iPhone 5c will need to upgrade their iPhone, although anyone unwilling to do that can apparently contact Apple and request a refund. It’s unclear whether that refund will be at the full Apple Watch value, or not.

Apple has initiated similar programs like this in the past when parts have been hard to come by, leading some users to receive newer, improved products as warranty replacements.

However, there is no guarantee that you will be lucky enough to receive an Apple Watch Series 3 if you take an Apple Watch Series 2 in for repair right now, given the reliance on stock shortages for that to happen. We certainly wouldn’t suggest trying to game the system here.

If of course you do have a legitimate claim on a broken Apple Watch Series 2, now might be the time to look into getting it repaired or, if you’re lucky, replaced.
