We may have reached the end of the line for the LG UltraFine 5K display. According to Apple’s online store, the monitor is officially “sold out.”
This follows Apple’s discontinuation of the LG UltraFine 4K display last month. While there’s a slim chance that stocks will be replenished, it’s likely that Apple is phasing out the monitors altogether. Possibly to get ready for its own upcoming next-gen display.
LG introduced the displays in 2016, after Apple dropped out of the business by ditching its Thunderbolt Displays. LG’s lineup received generally good reviews. However, they also caused problems for many Apple fans. The display problems ultimately caused Apple to delay orders and block sales until things got ironed out.
What to expect from Apple’s next-gen display
Talk of a next-gen Apple display dates back several years now, with nothing to show for it yet. Last month, noted Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo suggested that Apple is set to release a 31.6-inch display. This, he suggested, “will target a very high-end position” and feature an “all-new design.”
With Apple’s annual Worldwide Developers Conference coming next month, Cupertino has an opportunity to showcase a new display. While WWDC typically focuses more on software than hardware, high-end displays are typically bought by pro-level consumers. That’s exactly the kind of people who flock to WWDC each year.
