We live on our screens. So do germs, bacteria and a buildup of skin oils.

I will spare you the details and, instead, recommend the Häns Swipe-Clean, a wet-dry tool that wipes away the gross microbial life thriving on your iPhone, iPad and Mac screens.

You don’t have to be a germophobe to occasionally wish to return your screen to the shiny clarity the gadget exhibited out of the box. Then again, you might suddenly become germ-aware when you start to think about all the fingers that have smeared signatures into the iPad checkout at your favorite boutique or cafe.

Amazon is loaded with screen-cleaning solutions, microfiber cloths and single-use wipes. You can even buy an ultraviolet case that looks like a small tanning bed for zapping smartphone germs.

Häns Swipe-Clean is a must-carry

The Häns Swipe-Clean is a reusable, compact, 2-in-1 tool.

Think of it as a small, two-sided deodorant stick. Capped on both ends, this flat, pocket-size cleaner has a cleaning side moistened with a solution that breaks up and lifts that germy residue.

Uncap the other end to reveal an antibacterial microfiber polisher, which looks like a folded up eyeglass-cleaning cloth, neatly tucked in. The sheet is folded around a little plastic block. The company recommends rewrapping the sheet every now and then to get a clean section.

Microfiber is known to be a weapon for removing germs from surfaces. And, according to California company Häns, ions on the cloth side are activated by the cleaning solution to “disrupt bacterial enzymes and stop energy metabolism and electrolyte transport, suffocating the bacteria.”

I can’t verify that this science took place on my screens. What I will vouch for is that the Häns tool made my screens look new again. I also now feel shame for the filthy buildup I allowed to take place, especially on my MacBook Pro.

Roughly the size and thickness of a pack of baseball cards, the Häns Swipe-Clean is hardly a burden to carry or pack. In fact, it deserves “essential” status among the things you carry every day.

The company also sells fresh polishing cloths and bottles of the cleaning solution to refill the Swipe-Clean cartridge.
