Microsoft HoloLens 2

In a short 12 minute video, we have Microsoft Advanced Optics General Manager, Zulfi Alam, talk about the unique technology behind the HoloLens 2 and how it differs from competitors such as Magic Leap.

Alam notes the device has 3 distinct advantages over competitors – the eye box (the area into which they can project the hologram to still have the light fall into your eye) is larger than anyone else, the eye relief (distance from the wave-guide to eye) is much larger (allowing users to wear glasses for example) and the resolution is high enough to actually read 8 pts text with – Alam says the only device capable of doing so.

He also revealed that the headset could support more than 1000 nits of brightness, enough to easily allow outdoor use, and that the field of view appears to be limited mostly by the amount of pixels the system could render rather than the optics, meaning component upgrades in future versions could easily expand the field of view.
