Following Apple’s quiet update to the current MacBook Pro laptops, details leaked from the supply chain suggest that Apple is working hard to build a surprising 16-inch MacBook Pro.
The massive display would potentially come from Samsung and use OLED technology (reports Joe Rossignol) and fits in with reports from earlier in 2019 that Apple was working to expand the MacBook portfolio.
Unfortunately there may be a long wait for Apple’s geekerati to get a hold of the larger 16-inch MacBook Pro. The macOS powered laptop range picked up a small spec bump in the last week as well as the first use of Intel’s ninth-generation technology.
Given the long lead time to design any new product and the indications that Samsung is only ‘in talks’ with Apple regarding the supply of these larger displays, along with the aforementioned bump, it’s unlikely we’ll see a 16-inch MacBook Pro in the near future. There’s a slim chance that Apple could spring these on the world at an October 2019 event, but it’s more likely that we’re looking at a 2020 announcement.
Which leaves Apple’s macOS supporters in a bit of a bind. Should they head for the latest 15-inch MacBook Pro with the newer Intel hardware just now and risk it being superseded early in the anticipated four-year life span of a new macOS device, or wait it out and see what shows up next year?
Personally I would recommend the latter; there are still questions over the MacBook butterfly keyboard and if the changes made by Apple will have a positive impact on the poor experience, and even with the tweaked specifications the current hardware design of the MacBook Pro is showing its age. A redesign is due, and I’d suggest that the larger screen will help launch the new family… at some point in the next year or two.
