Xiaomi and Oppo Show Off Under-Display Selfie Cameras

Phone makers have been working on various different designs to get around the notch. There’s been a bunch of small notch designs, as well as slide-out parts that help completely get rid of the need to put a notch. And now, the companies are stepping up to under-display selfie cameras that completely get rid of the notch, and the need to put a hole for the camera on the displays.

Oppo today revealed a working prototype for its under-display camera. The company showed off a prototype device with the new under-display video camera that works just like a regular camera, except it’s actually under a display. So it kind of works much like an under-display fingerprint scanner.

Oppo VP Brian Shen apparently said that the new under-display cameras still need a ton of work. “At this stage, it’s difficult for under-display cameras to match the same results as normal cameras, there’s bound to be some loss in optical quality. But, no new technology jumps to perfection right away.” Shen said, as reported by Engadget.

Shortly after Oppo revealed its under-display camera prototype, Xiaomi came out with its own prototype of the under-display camera:

Both the devices from Xiaomi and Oppo look incredibly cool but considering they are still at the prototype stage, it could be a while before consumers get to see their hands on the tech.

Boy, all those notched phones from the 2017-2021 time frame aren't going to age well, are they?

I just took a hammer to my current-gen phone that has an amazing facial recognition setup on its front-facing display because — at some point in the next 2-4 years, some rival phone MIGHT achieve a similar level of quality with a better-disguised implementation.

How does the camera get past whatever is being displayed on the screen right over it?
