AMD has a lot to prove with it next-generation Navi graphics architecture. While the company got its feet wet with a new 7nm process node with the Radeon VII, that was a refresh of its Vega architecture (Vega 20). Navi plots a new path forward with Radeon DNA (RDNA) architecture, which promises faster clock speeds, excellent gaming performance and lower power consumption.

The first entry into this new RDNA family is the Radeon RX 5700 XT, which will be the world's first PCIe 4.0 graphics card. It comes with a total of 40 compute units and 2560 stream processors. The base GPU clock is listed at 1605MHz, while the max boost clock is rated for 1905MHz. Slotting in between those goal posts is a Game Clock of 1755MHz. The Game Clock represents clock target under typical gaming loads.

AMD is pairing the Radeon RX 5700 XT with 8GB of 14Gbps GDDR6 memory with a 256-bit bus and 448GB/sec of bandwidth. When all is said and done, AMD claims that the card is capable of 9.75 TFLOPS of compute power. For comparison, the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 maxes out at 7.5 TFLOPS FP32 compute. The Radeon RX 5700 XT is rated for total board power of 225W.

Interestingly, AMD has gone with a new blower-style cooling setup with a redesigned shroud this time around. The shroud and the backplate are made of an aluminum alloy, and the card employs vapor chamber cooling. A 7-phase digital power system is in use and you'll find 8-pin and 6-pin power connectors at the top of the card.

The Radeon RX 5700 XT is being positioned as the best gaming card for 1440p-class gaming, and will compete directly against the GeForce RTX 2070. There will also be a Radeon RX 5700 (minus the XT) which has just 36 compute units and 2304 stream processors, while maintaining its 8GB of GDDR6 memory on board. Base, Game, And Boost clocks are listed at 1465MHz, 1625MHz, and 1725MHz respectively. It will top out at 7.95 TFLOPS FP32 compute. The Radeon RX 5700 is also targeted at 1440p gaming, and will compete favorably against the GeForce RTX 2060 by AMD’s estimates.

Both cards feature a single HDMI 2.0b port and three DisplayPort 1.4 connectors. Radeon FreeSync 2 HDR is supported and AMD says that both cards can output 4K at 240Hz, 4K HDR at 120Hz and 8K HDR at 60Hz.

AMD announced that the Radeon RX 5700 XT and the Radeon RX 5700 will be priced at $449 and $379 respectively when they land on store shelves July 7th.

But wait, there's more! AMD also announced a flagship graphics cards to celebrate its 50th anniversary as a company. Called the Radeon RX 5700 XT 50th Anniversary Edition, this SKU still has 40 compute units, but bumps Base, Game, and Boost clocks to 1680MHz, 1830MHz and 1980MHz respectively. Likewise, FP32 compute rises to 10.14 TFLOPs from 9.75 TFLOPS. According to AMD, the Radeon RX 5700 XT 50th Anniversary Edition will launch priced at $499.
