CPU Shootout: Two Top 8-Core 2019 MacBook Pros

June 11th, 2019 by rob-ART morgan, mad scientist

When doing CPU intensive tasks, is the 2019 MacBook Pro 15-inch with 2.4GHz 8-Core CPU much faster than the 2.3GHz 8-Core model?

GRAPH LEGEND

2019 rMBP 2.4 8c = MacBook Pro 2.4GHz 8-core Intel i9, Turbo Boost up to 5.0GHz, 16GB of 2400MHz DDR4 memory, Radeon Pro Vega 20 GPU (4GB HBM2 memory)
2019 rMBP 2.3 8c = MacBook Pro 2.3GHz 8-core Intel i9, Turbo Boost up to 4.8GHz, 16GB of 2400MHz DDR4 memory, Radeon Pro 560X GPU (4GB GDDR5 memory)
2018 rMBP 2.9 6c
= MacBook Pro 2.9GHz 6-core Intel i9, Turbo Boost up to 4.8GHz, 16GB of 2400MHz DDR4 memory, Radeon Pro 560X GPU (4GB GDDR5 memory)
2018 rMBP 2.6 6c
= MacBook Pro 2.6GHz 6-core Intel i7, Turbo Boost up to 4.3GHz, 16GB of 2400MHz DDR4 memory, Radeon Pro 560X GPU (4GB GDDR5 memory)

Cinebench 20 - CPU Only

Render sample 3D scene using all CPU cores. (HIGHEST score = FASTEST)

LuxMark - CPU Only

Render the default LuxBall scene using all CPU cores. (HIGHEST KSamples/sec = FASTEST)

Blender 2.79 - CPU Only

The render of the bmw27_cpu.blend demo scene all CPU cores. (LOWEST time in seconds = FASTEST)

INSIGHTS

Keep in mind that the 2.4GHz base frequency of the top 2019 15-inch 8-Core model is 4% faster than the 2.3GHz base frequency of the next level 8-core model. And the 5.0GHz Turbo Boost of the top model is 4% faster than the 4.8GHz Turbo Boost of the next level 8-core model. As you can see from the three graphs above, that does not always translate into the top model being 4% faster.

We are just getting started comparing the two top 2019 MacBook Pro models. We still don't have the 2.4GHz 8-core model in our lab, but thanks to a 'remote mad scientist' code named "at large in Gotham City," we are able to give you these prelim CPU comparison results.

After running and publishing some CPU intensive pro app tests, we plan some interesting GPU intensive pro app tests comparing the Pro 560X GPU to the Pro Vega 20 GPU -- including a new one using the Enhance function in Adobe Lightroom Classic.

Meanwhile, here is last year's brief comparison of the Pro 560X GPU versus the Pro Vega 20 GPU in the 2018 MacBook Pro.
