Small Fry, the memoir written by Steve Jobs’ oldest daughter Lisa Brennan-Jobs, is out in paperback this week. It launched in hardcover in September 2018.

The book describes the difficult relationship Lisa had with her father, who famously denied his daughter’s paternity. The pair eventually forged a relationship, although it was often a challenging one.

Small Fry joins the mountain of books to have been written about Steve. However, it has a very different (and more personal) take than almost all of them. When Small Fry was published in hardback last year, Jobs family — consisting of Laurene Powell Jobs, her children, and Jobs’ sister, Mona Simpson — gave the following statement:

“Lisa is part of our family, so it was with sadness that we read her book, which differs dramatically from our memories of those times. The portrayal of Steve is not the husband and father we knew. Steve loved Lisa, and he regretted that he was not the father he should have been during her early childhood. It was a great comfort to Steve to have Lisa home with all of us during the last days of his life, and we are all grateful for the years we spent together as a family.”

A compelling portrait

The book is published by Grove Press in paperback, and retails for $11.59 on Amazon (RRP $17). You can read my review of it here. While it doesn’t dwell (or, in many cases, even detail) the tech work that Steve Jobs did, it’s a compelling portrait.

Lisa notably did not give an interview to Jobs’ biographer, Walter Isaacson. This book was prompted by her apparent dislike of the Isaacson biography. As a result, this is a story that many Apple fans may not have heard before.
