2018 MacBook Air Has a Logic Board Problem

Apple will offer free repairs on a 'very small number' of 2018 MacBook Air models which involves replacing the main logic board. Expect an email if your Air is faulty.

If you own a 2018 MacBook Air, there's a chance the main logic board needs replacing. Thankfully, it's not a fire risk like the 2015 MacBook Pro, and Apple will carry out the repair for free.

As 9To5Mac reports, the specific model of the MacBook Air affected is the Retina 13-inch and Apple knows specifically which serial numbers need repairing. Emails will be sent out informing all 2018 MacBook Air owners who have the faulty logic board that a repair is required and what to do next.

Apple Stores and authorized third-party repair outlets can perform the repair, but it's not known how long it will take to swap out the logic board. As to why the board needs replacing, Apple hasn't explained beyond pointing to a power issue in an internal memo to repair staff.

As Apple is emailing affected owners, it seems unlikely we'll hear anymore about this from the company or see a new Exchange and Repair Extension Program setup. It sounds like the number of Airs that need the repair is quite small, too.

When PCMag reviewed the MacBook Air (2018) last year we were glad to see the sleek ultraportable finally getting a Retina Display and updated components. It's certainly not the fastest of laptops and lacks configuration options, but if you insist on having a macOS machine and your use is casual, the Air is a good fit even if it's poor value in terms of performance per dollar.
