If you thought that Apple had slightly lost its touch when it comes to naming products, you’re not likely to be swayed by the nickname suggestions included on iOS 13’s Game Center.
They are, well, pretty gloriously weird.
First noticed by iOS dev Steve Moser is the fact that Game Centre includes nickname suggestions for users. Generated by AI (although we’d hesitate the results as, frankly, intelligent), the nicknames are pretty darn nonsensical.
Running the iOS 13 Beta?
Stop what you’re doing and reply with your Settings > Game Center > Nickname suggestions. Mine are:
“Wealthy Frogman from Puce Hill”
and
“Discrete Bear of Blue City” https://t.co/ERIaZzXNtu pic.twitter.com/6LXOyrSfh9— Steve Moser (@SteveMoser) July 9, 2019
Moser’s suggestions included “Wealthy Frogman from Puce Hill” and “Discrete Bear of Blue City.” Other users in the Twitter thread shared bot-generated names including “Reaper from Phantasm Kingdom,” “Jealous Oryx from Cyan Outpost” and “Nice Mamba from Blue Meadow.” It’s, frankly, pretty bonkers stuff — but amusingly irreverent.
No, it’s probably not the most significant demonstration of Apple’s investment in AI. But it’s definitely pretty funny. And if that was the mission, we consider it well accomplished!
Are you running the iOS 13 beta? If so, let us know what nickname Apple creates for you.
