iPhone XI To Ditch 3D Touch, Apple Signing BOE On As New OLED Supplier

The notoriously unreliable DigiTimes is out with a couple of new reports in which it claims that Apple is getting ready to remove 3D Touch from all of its 2019 iPhones. It’s also said to be bringing a new OLED manufacturer online, too.

These are not the first rumors suggesting that 3D Touch is not long for this world. Analysts have been making similar noises for months and when Apple didn’t ship 3D Touch on last year’s iPhone XR, eyebrows were raised. The feature remains an iPhone-only feature, too, with no iPads supporting it. As a result, 3D Touch-like features have been transferred to Haptic Touch, giving Apple a way out should it nix the feature completely.

The reports also say that Apple is working to add BOE to the supply chain for its OLED planets. The reasons appear to be related to the recent Japanese restrictions of exports to Korea, something that could cause problems for the company with its current supply chain configuration.

Apple and CEO Tim Cook are notable for their attention to detail when it comes to supply chain and a move like this would be very much in character. The biggest of the two reports for consumers will be the loss of 3D Touch, however. And just how many people will even notice that it’s gone is something that is open to debate, too.

Apple will likely launch three new iPhones later this year, with an announcement and subsequent release taking place in September.
