iPhone XR is by far Apple’s most popular handset right now

The iPhone XR is currently far and away Apple’s top-selling iPhone model in the U.S.. Right now, it makes up just under half of all new iPhone models sold in Apple’s biggest market.

That’s the highest percentage of sales for a single iPhone model since the iPhone 6 back in 2015.

These figures come from Consumer Intelligence Research Partners (CIRP). CIRP partner and co-founder Josh Lowitz described the iPhone XR as the “dominant iPhone model” at present. He noted that:

“Its 48% share of sales in the quarter is the highest we’ve seen for an individual model since the iPhone 6 in 2015, which shared top billing with the 6 Plus, but only had two outdated legacy models offered as alternatives. Apple set out to create a competitive model, with current features like a large screen on a midsize handset, at a price that falls near the leading Android phones.”

While the iPhone XR is certainly not cheap, it’s significantly cheaper than the iPhone XS and XS Max. Its spec might be slightly lower, but not enough to put customers off. Altogether, Apple’s latest generation of iPhones make up 67% of U.S. sales in the third quarter of the year.

Which Services do iPhone users use?

The report also details how Apple’s Services are doing among iPhone users. This aspect of Apple’s business has become increasingly important. As iPhone sales have slowed, Services have been more heavily promoted.

CIRP says that the most popular Apple Service among iPhone users is a paid iCloud plan. Approximately 48% of users have signed up for this. Meanwhile, 35% are Apple Music subscribers. After this, 30% use Apple Podcasts, 15% Apple News and Apple TV, and just 3-6% AppleCare.

CIRP co-founder and partner Mike Levin says that much of Apple’s success depends on its head start. “For example, for a long time Apple had one of the only apps for podcasts, so its podcast app has the highest penetration for iPhone buyers,” Levin said.

The rule isn’t universal, however. Apple Music has made inroads quickly despite launching later than many streaming music services. (This was backed up recently by another report showing how quickly Amazon’s music service is growing.)

How will the next generation of Services do?

The current estimated figures for Services are interesting. What’s going to be really interesting to see, however, is how Apple’s new premium services do.

When it launches Apple Arcade and Apple TV+ it will be adding more paid Services to the mix. If it can make a success of these products it will bode very well for Apple’s future money-making Services division.
