Samsung Set To Launch Exynos SoCs with AMD Radeon Graphics in 2021

Samsung and AMD had recently announced a multi-year strategic partnership that would allow Samsung to license AMD graphics IP for their future SoCs. A new report has confirmed that Samsung is planning to launch SoCs with AMD Radeon graphics in 2021. A Samsung spokesperson is also quoted saying that the company could be planning to leverage the partnership with AMD for smartphones as well as other applications. This suggests that Samsung may add Exynos SoCs with AMD Radeon Graphics for tablets and other devices, which could give Samsung an edge over other ARM SoC manufacturers.

Although the deal between the two tech giants is still fresh, Samsung is expected to release Exynos processors with GPU logic based on AMD’s new RDNA graphics architecture as early as 2021. Other reports have quoted Samsung spokesperson saying that, “… considering the usual time it takes to vet out IT technology, we expect that the GPU technology will start being adopted in products that will be launched two years down the road roughly.” The spokesperson also added that, “… AMD has been a leader, especially in the GPU area since the early days of the PC market and is one of the leaders in terms of technology. We think that with this partnership, we will be able to leverage the GPU competitiveness of AMD to enhance the performance of not only our mobile SOCs, but also in other applications.”

AMD is be aiming to develop graphics technology that can work in low-power and thermally constrained devices by introducing their gaming architecture to mobile devices. With this partnership, Samsung could gain a unique advantage over other smartphone manufacturers by developing gaming smartphones that support enhanced graphics and smooth gameplay. However, it is still unknown whether Samsung will supply processors with Radeon graphics to other manufacturers or if AMD will license their technology to other companies along with Samsung.

AMD’s RDNA architecture is expected to replace the ARM-designed Mali GPUs that currently come with Samsung’s Exynos SoCs. This could also mean that the technology may not come to every country in which Samsung sells their phones. Generally, Samsung releases phone with Exynos SoCs in most of their markets. However, the company sells smartphones with Qualcomm Snapdragon processors and Adreno-branded GPUs in US, China, Canada, Latin America, and Japan.
