Apple this week upgraded its official USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter to support 4K HDR video at up to 60Hz.
The newest model, numbered A2119, boasts HDMI 2.0 connectivity. That means you can enjoy HDR10 and Dolby Vision content when outputting video from a compatible Mac or iPad Pro.
The $69 USB-C AV dongle was starting to look a little long in the tooth. The previous model used HDMI 1.4 connectivity, which meant it could only output 1080p video at 60Hz, and 4K at 30Hz.
The newest model brings the adapter up to speed with today’s devices. But there is a catch.
Apple’s new USB-C AV adapter is worth it again
Model A2119, still priced at $69, is compatible with devices running macOS Mojave 10.14.6 or later, or iOS 12.4 or later. It can be used to output video at the following resolutions and refresh rates:
- Up to 1080p at 60Hz
- 3840 x 2160 (4K) at 30Hz
- 3840 x 2160 (4K) at 60Hz with these devices:
- 15-inch MacBook Pro (2017 or later)
- Retina iMac (2017 or later)
- iMac Pro
- iPad Pro
This is a big upgrade over the previous model, which maxed out at 30Hz when outputting 4K, regardless of the device you used. But the new adapter might not be the only thing you need.

To enjoy super-sharp 4K content sent from your Mac or iPad Pro, you will also need a TV, monitor, or projector that supports 4K. It should also be noted that not all 4K devices support HDR.
