Dell Adds 'Comet Lake' Chips to XPS, Inspiron, Vostro Laptops

Intel's 10th Gen 'Comet Lake' 14nm processors are being taken full advantage of by Dell as it rolls out a range of updated laptop models.

Intel today launched a second batch of 10th Gen Core processors code-named "Comet Lake." Unlike the already-unveiled 10nm Ice Lake chips, Comet Lake chips stick with a 14nm manufacturing process and are focused on "traditional computing performance." Dell has been quick to take advantage of that across its range of laptops.

Announced ahead of IFA 2019 in Berlin next month, Dell's new models will use the 10th Gen Comet Lake processors. Top of the list is the Dell XPS 13 (7390), which will offer Core i3, Core i5, and Core i7 U-Series Comet Lake processor options.

At the high end is the hexacore Core i7-10710U capable of running at up to 4.6GHz. It's also the first laptop built with GORE Thermal Insulation, which claims to offer "thermal conductivity levels lower than air" leading to increased overall laptop performance. Linux users will be happy to hear Dell will be shipping a Developer Edition of this new XPS 13 using Ubuntu 18.04 instead of Windows 10. Expect the Comet Lake XPS 13 to be available on Aug. 27.

Dell Vostro 5000 (5590) Comet Lake Laptop

For small business customers, Dell is set to offer Comet Lake versions of its Vostro laptops. We'll get the option of the Vostro 14 and 15 5000 series combining a Core i3, Core i5, or Core i7 U-Series Comet Lake processor with the option of a Nvidia GeForce MX230 or MX 250 GPU, TPM 2.0 security chip, and a fingerprint reader. There's also a 13-inch Vostro 13 5000 and all three models should be available this week.

Finally, we have a 10th Gen update for the Inspiron range of laptops. Dell is adding Comet Lake chips to suit everyone's needs, be that a 13-, 14-, and 15-inch laptop and across the 3000, 5000, and 7000 model ranges. Depending on the model selected, you'll be able to buy a Comet Lake Inspiron starting this week, with the full range becoming available throughout September and early October.

While Dell has been quick to embrace Comet Lake processors across its consumer and small business range, it's not the only company to do so. MSI announced today that two of its upcoming laptops, the Prestige 14 and Prestige 15, will use Comet Lake processors and can be equipped with the most powerful Core i7 U-series chip (Core i7-10710U). Expect others to follow soon.

If you'd prefer to be using a laptop with a 10nm Ice Lake processor inside, Dell has you covered there with the recently announced XPS 13 2-in-1.
