'Mario Kart Tour' Is Coming Soon To iOS And Android Devices

This article is more than 4 years old.

Mario Kart Tour is the first game in the long-running kart-racing franchise that isn't coming to a Nintendo system. Instead, it's coming to both iOS and Android, and it's coming soon.

The new pocket-sized game lands on September 25th on iPhones, iPads and Android devices. Here's a bit of footage to show you what to expect:

It looks like it could be a lot of fun, though there's just no way any racing game is going to feel as good on a touchscreen as it does with a gamepad. Hopefully a full-fledged Mario Kart game will release soon on the Nintendo Switch. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is fantastic, but it was a Wii U game before being ported to the Switch.

Still, I have to admit that Mario Kart Tour looks quite good and while I don't tend to play many mobile games, I do plan on playing this one. I love Mario Kart and I have ever since Super Mario Kart released in 1992. Hopefully this one introduces more people (and especially young people) to the joys of the series and nudges them toward the beauties of console gaming. That's Nintendo's plan, anyways, and I don't think it's a bad one.

Hopefully Nintendo doesn't over-monetize with this one. The company's monetization strategy has been all over the map when it comes to mobile games. There's nothing like poorly implemented microtransactions to ruin a perfectly decent mobile game, after all. We'll find out soon enough.
