Microsoft has announced it will be holding a special event next month and tech fans believe they know what’s coming.

For the last few years, the company has been building a line of tablets that can be used with snap-on keyboards. These are sleek gadgets made from aluminium and are designed to offer a potent blend of portability and productivity.

Known as the Surface Pro range, they’re meant as an alternative to Apple’s famous iPad Pro tablets.

And with an event taking place in New York on 2 October, many believe that Microsoft is about to take the wraps off the Surface Pro 7.

While rumours suggest the form factor will be unchanged (a 12.3-inch screen with a kickstand out the back and support for a Microsoft Type Cover) there have been some interesting suggestions about the specifications.

The Surface Pro 7 will likely arrive with the very latest Intel i7 processor chip, it may also make the move to USB-C, something Apple did last year with the iPad Pro. There may also be a lower-specced model with a correspondingly low price as a way to counter the iPad Pro’s premium cost.

Meanwhile, the top-specced model may include a 4G/LTE option for wireless communication away from WiFi.

Apple didn’t update its premium iPad model at its own event last week, leaving the path clear for Microsoft to pick up steam with a stable of new devices next month.
