macOS Catalina Sidecar iPad Compatibility: Is Your Model Supported?

Apple’s macOS Catalina brings with it plenty of new features but probably the most impressive is Sidecar. It allows users of Macs to extend their screens onto an iPad or iPad Pro, giving them additional working space. There is also support for things like Apple Pencil, too.

Along with Apple Pencil, apps that run in Sidecar also get access to a version of the MacBook Pro’s Touchbar, too. That gives users instant access to some of their most used features and shortcuts without having to take their chances with the flaky keyboard on Apple’s portables.

Sidecar has the potential to be a real game changer for Mac productivity, especially for users who can take advantage of the Apple Pencil support, too. Unfortunately Sidecar won’t work with all iPads, however.

The good news is that it works with a ton, and we have the full rundown of which those are right here. Essentially if your iPad supports Apple Pencil, it’ll support Sidecar as well.

Supported iPad models

Apple Pencil (1st-generation):

  • iPad Air (3rd generation)
  • iPad mini (5th generation)
  • iPad (7th generation)
  • iPad (6th generation)
  • iPad Pro 12.9-inch (2nd generation)
  • iPad Pro 12.9-inch (1st generation)
  • iPad Pro 10.5-inch
  • iPad Pro 9.7-inch

Apple Pencil (2nd generation):

  • iPad Pro 12.9-inch (3rd generation)
  • iPad Pro 11-inch

We’d also expect future iPads to support the feature as and when they are released. Additionally, check out our post on Sidecar-compatible Macs here: macOS 10.15 Catalina Sidecar Compatibility For Mac: Here Are The Details.
