A new proposal imagines iPhones running next year’s iOS 14 able to display two applications side-by-side. Split View would enable users to, for example, look at a webpage while writing an email, and drag-and-drop items between them.

iOS 14 with Split View: a proposal

This design imagines iOS 14 including a Dock that can be hidden, like iPadOS or macOS. Icons displayed here could be dragged out to launch the application next to an already-running one, as is done with iPads now.

The idea of two apps running side-by-side was ridiculous with the small screens on early iPhone models, but is much more practical with today’s far larger ones. Especially with the 2020 iPhone reportedly increasing the display size to 5.8 inches.

The iOS 14 concept brings in some other much-requested multi-tasking features: having an incoming call not take over the screen, and having Siri not also commandeer the entire display.

Apple is likely hard at work on the next version of of mobile operating system. That said, iOS 13 only launched a few weeks ago so it’ll be nearly a year before we discover if the replacement has any of these suggestions.
