Apple will be launching iPhone SE 2 in first quarter of 2020 for $399. The phone will have an A13 chip, which is also being used in iPhone 11, along with 3GB RAM. This latest report comes from analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who has a reliable track record when it comes to Apple.

With a starting price of $399, iPhone SE 2 will be the cheapest iPhone model on offer. The current cheapest model is iPhone 8, which starts from $449, and ships with rather dated components.

iPhone SE 2 features

Ming-Chi Kuo has shared a list of the following iPhone SE 2 features:

  • A13 processor
  • 3GB LPDDR4X RAM
  • Storage options: 64GB and 128GB
  • Colors: Space Gray, Silver and Product RED

Touch ID

It has been mentioned before that iPhone SE 2 will have an iPhone 8 design, so this naturally puts features like Face ID out of the equation. Apple is expected use Touch ID again for this low-budget iPhone model, like they do with low-budget iPad models. Touch ID is also being used across the MacBook Pro line-up which shows that, despite being cheaper to use, Apple prefers to use it in high-end products too.

No wireless charging and 3D Touch

Just like iPhone 8, we don’t expect to see any wireless charging in iPhone SE 2. However, to be competitive with other smartphones in 2020, Apple might want to surprise customers with such a basic feature. As expected, 3D Touch will not be a part of the new phone, since Apple is ditching it in favor of Haptic Touch across the whole iPhone line-up.

Camera

We would not be surprised if Apple re-uses the same camera system as they use in iPhone 11. The last generation iPhone SE was released with the same camera as iPhone 6s, which was not bad at all. This might mean that new model might have features like Deep Fusion, Night Mode, excellent video recording and the new camera app, which are all exclusive to iPhone 11 series for now.

Battery life

An iPhone 8-like design will mean that iPhone SE 2 will have a larger 5-inch display. A larger battery, combined with A13’s efficiency, and lower resolution display, will give the SE 2 superb battery life.

iPhone SE 2 might end up being a great bargain for users heavily invested in the iOS ecosystem. Kuo has predicted that customers who are still using iPhone 6 and iPhone 6s are likely to upgrade when SE 2 hits the market, due to its value proposition.

Apple is also planning major updates to its flagship devices in 2020. The company plans to ship all iPhone 12 models with OLED displays and 5G. There are also news that USB-C will replace Lightning in iPhone 12. A notch-less design is also rumored to be on the cards.
