The foldable market stands at the very peak of the premium smartphone segment, and cameras are a rather important feature in that price bracket. It's no surprise, then, that Microsoft has announced its intent to provide the upcoming Surface Duo with brilliant camera performance.

After eons of speculation and rumors, Microsoft finally showcased its much-awaited Android device, the Surface Duo. At an event a few days ago, the company revealed a few details on the device.

Of course, nothing concrete was given up, as the Surface Duo is still a fair bit away from launch. However, when quizzed, Microsoft Chief Product Officer Panos Panay was reported to have confirmed that the company was "working on a world-class camera” for the Surface Duo.

It stands to reason that the company would hype up the hardware of an upcoming premium device. One could hardly expect the executive to say otherwise. That said, talk is cheap and all the matters is how the phone's cameras actually stack up in real life.

The nature of the Surface Duo severely limits the potential of its camera hardware. Unlike foldables like the Samsung Galaxy Fold and Huawei Mate X that are single, foldable units, the SurfaceDuo is actually two separate units joined at a hinge. As such, each unit has to be on the slim side.

We're interested in seeing how Microsoft handles the Surface Duo's cameras; while it may be a productivity-based device, cameras are rather important these days and it has to match up to the competition at least. The company has also confirmed that the foldable will not have 5G support.
