AMD Radeon graphics would finally receive a long-awaited feature. AMD is, reportedly, getting ready for a major assault of the graphics GPU front.

According to TechRadar, the Santa Clara, California-based company plans to add support for the much-awaited integer scaling feature to its flagship graphics drivers Radeon.

The integer scaling feature, for starters, is a method of implementing sharper upscaling for pixel art games like Shovel Knight and Sonic Mania. When added, this new feature will sharpen up visuals and improves the appearances of upscaled low-resolution games.

Many older PC games don’t support the high-resolution display, and that’s where this new feature comes in. Integer scaling solves the problem by multiplying the pixels on the display to scale, rather than stretch the image. Then, it applies a sort of anti-aliasing technique to smooth things out and to get rid of those telltale blocky images. It’s not just older games, even modern 3D games will also benefit from this amazing feature.

Integer scaling is no longer new in the GPU space. At the recent GamesCom event, Intel and Nvidia separately announced updated drivers that reportedly scale resolution on the GPU drivers using integer scaling. But it was Intel that made the first step when it announced the integer scaling feature in June. Then in August, Nvidia announced that it has added the feature integer scaling in its Turing graphics cards.

Nvidia’s integer scaling feature can be accessed via the Nvidia Control Panel, while the Intel’s version can be found in Intel Graphics Command Center. However, for Intel, the feature has only implemented on the latest Gen11 GPUs.

AMD has been reported working on the integer scaling feature through traces found in the Linux driver patches. However, there hasn’t been any official statement yet from the company. The GPU-based integer scaling has become the most requested feature in the AMD Adrenalin feedback page, the PCGamesN reported.

The company will likely add the integer scaling feature in the upcoming AMD Adrenalin driver update in December. Right now, it still unclear when exactly integer scaling will arrive in AMD graphics drivers. But, given the multiple reports as well as the news about Nvidia and Intel’s implementation of their integer scaling features, it’s not too farfetched to conclude that AMD is now on its way to implement the much-requested feature.
