Apple Is Developing New Media Apps for Windows

A senior software engineer job listing makes it clear Windows 10 (and possibly Xbox) users are getting new media apps from Apple.

Whether Apple likes it or not, everyone who uses Apple's services doesn't necessarily own a Mac. Supporting users on Windows is clearly not a priority for Apple, but a job listing confirms new media apps are in the works for the most popular desktop operating system in the world.

Apple killed iTunes back in June, replacing it with three different apps called Music, TV, and Podcasts for macOS users. Windows users got no such apps and were left with the existing iTunes software and web versions of certain services such as Apple TV+ and Apple Music. However, as MacRumors reports, the situation is set to change if a job listing is to be believed.

Apple's job site posted a new role back on Nov. 7 for a "Senior Software Engineer - Windows Media Apps," which is a very clear indication on its own of new apps planned for Windows. The job description goes on to say, "The Media Apps team is looking for a creative Senior Software Engineer to work on the next generation of media apps for Windows."

It seems likely Apple is planning to replace the existing iTunes app with equivalent Windows versions of Music, TV, and Podcasts, but also an updated iCloud. There's another telling detail in the job listing, though. In the Key Qualifications section it states "Experience with UWP a big plus." Universal Windows Platform apps are what appear in the Microsoft Store, but they also have the added benefit of running on Xbox and even HoloLens devices.

It makes sense for Apple to target as wide a user base outside of its core Mac base as possible, and if it can cater to all variants of Windows 10 and Xbox users with one set of apps, it seems like the intelligent thing to do.
