Intel has released a public apology to address complaints regarding the shipment delays hitting its chips.

Intel Executive VP and GM of Sales, Marketing, and Communications, Michelle Johnston Holthaus, explains in a letter posted on the company website that aligning the production with the demand is a thing that they are still struggling to resolve.

“I’d like to acknowledge and sincerely apologize for the impact recent PC CPU shipment delays are having on your business and to thank you for your continued partnership. I also want to update you on our actions and investments to improve supply-demand balance and support you with performance-leading Intel products. Despite our best efforts, we have not yet resolved this challenge,” the Intel executive explains.

Aligning production with demand

However, Intel has already increased 14nm wafer capacity and is now working to do the same for 10nm production, an approach that has already increased PC chip supply by double digits, according to the company’s own figures.

But this doesn’t necessarily mean that the chip shortage is resolved, and Intel is fully aware of it.

Supply continues to be tight, Holthaus says, and the limited inventory is what’s causing the delays that have generated so much frustration across the world.

“Supply remains extremely tight in our PC business where we are operating with limited inventory buffers. This makes us less able to absorb the impact of any production variability, which we have experienced in the quarter. This has resulted in the shipment delays you are experiencing, which we appreciate is creating significant challenges for your business. Because the impact and revised shipment schedules vary, Intel representatives are reaching out with additional information and to answer your questions,” the Intel official says.

With sales expected to grow in the holiday season, the CPU shipment delay is unlikely to be resolved too soon, despite promises to continue working “tirelessly.”
