AMD Announces Shock 64-Core Threadripper 3990X Is Coming Next Year

This article is more than 4 years old.

AMD has announced the icing on the cake of this morning's 3rd Gen Threadripper review embargo - a 64-core model, also known as the Threadripper 3990X.

In what many had speculated to be its next move given its move to a more scalable CPU socket in sTR4X and a couple more model names able to sit above the current flagship 3970X, the company has revealed a monster desktop processor that will offer 64-cores and 128 threads.

It will also have 288MB cache - essentially double what the Threadripper 3970X has (see my review of the Threadripper 3970X and 3960X and also Intel's Core i9-10980XE) along with the Zen 2 architecture and 7nm manufacturing process.

From early images it appears to have a similar layout to 3rd Gen Threadripper, but with 4 more Core Chiplet dies, accounting for the extra 32 cores. AMD already owns the high-end desktop market with its 3rd Generation Threadripper CPUs comfortably seeing off Intel's new Core i9-10980XE in most tests.

There's no word on pricing yet and availability is mentioned as being 2020, so AMD could in theory ship the CPU with its next generation architecture depending when in 2020 it lands. Follow me on TwitterFacebookYouTubeInstagram or Reddit for more PC news and reviews.
