The Xbox One's biggest problem came from its games.

The console, though it suffered a stilted launch thanks to the power and price of its rival PS4 console, was a good piece of kit. The launch of the Xbox One X in November 2017 was a rallying point for Microsoft and proved that Xbox as a company could still perform when it needed to.

But the games library has always been a problem for Microsoft. Though ID@Xbox delivers some incredible timed exclusives for the company, its first party exclusives often lack the fanfare and critical reception of PlayStation-exclusive games.

Ahead of the launch of the Xbox Scarlett, Microsoft is keen to make sure it doesn't make the same mistakes again and delivers regular, high-quality games.

To that end, GamesRadar+ recently sat down with Matt Booty, head of Xbox Game Studios, to talk about what the company is planning to do when it comes to Scarlett's exclusive line-up.

And it looks like good news for Xbox fans.

"We feel really good heading into 2020," explains Booty.

"We've got a goal of being able to deliver a game, roughly, every three to four months. We have a little bit of work to do to get there. It'll be lumpy, but we’re closer than we were. And so we feel really good going into 2020 – and the run-up to Project Scarlett – with our content line-up."

Considering Xbox has felt limited to Halo, Forza, Gears and Sea of Thieves for the majority of the generation, this is good news – it means we might see the software and hardware giant diversify its brands a little and offer players more choice than ever before on its platform.

"I think we've certainly felt more confident and proud to be able to talk about first-party lately," Booty continues.

"However, I think it's super important to remember that content comes under Xbox through three avenues. So there is Xbox Game Studios; that's our first-party. There's our third party, and we have got a tremendous volume of content coming in through third-party partnerships – and that includes things like we announced at X019, with series like Yakuza, Kingdom Hearts, and Final Fantasy coming to Xbox.

Xbox Update: Good news, Halo Infinite Xbox One isn't ‘second-class’ compared to Scarlett

But just because there's a renewed focus on triple-A, that doesn't mean Xbox will be leaving the little guys behind... there'll still be a distinct focus on indie games at Microsoft, too.

"And then there's this third avenue of content, which comes in through ID@Xbox; I'm always amazed by ID@Xbox, they put up these montage trailers that go on for like 20-minutes [laughs]. I'm blown away by the success that we've had with that programme."

So as we head towards Holiday 2020, when the Scarlett is expected to launch, it looks like Microsoft is remedying all the major issues fans had with the Xbox One.

Between this and the PlayStation 5 price news we've heard this week, it looks like 2020 is going to be a vintage year for gamers.
