New MacBook Pro Innovations Will Have To Wait Behind iPad

This article is more than 4 years old.

Mere weeks after the launch of the 16-inch MacBook Pro, reports are coming out of an update to the screen on Apple’s largest laptops. But devotees of the deskbound computer system shouldn’t get too disheartened by the news of an update to the screen technology just yet.

The new screen is scheduled to appear in late Q4 2020, and would move Apple’s MacBook Pro forwards from an LED screen to a micro-LED screen according to the latest report from Ming-Chi Kuo. Chance Miller has the details:

"Kuo predicts that Apple will bring mini LED to 4-6 products over time, but that the switch over will start with the 12.9-inch iPad Pro in Q3 2020.

"…Kuo says Apple will release an updated model of the 16-inch MacBook Pro in Q4 2020 that also uses mini LED technology. Kuo had previously predicted that the iPad and MacBook Pro would switch to mini LED in late 2020 or early 2021, and today’s report doubles down on the earlier side of that window.”

Mini-LED screens offer a number of advantages, but I suspect the key feature will be the lack of burn-in that OLED screens can suffer. Given the lifespan of a laptop screen can be measured in years, keeping the wide color gamut and dynamic range also offered by micro-LED is a priority. And like almost every modern Apple component, the micro-LED display panel can be thinner and lighter than the corresponding LED panel.

What it won’t be is something exclusive to the MacBook family. Kuo also reports that the technology is likely to make its Apple debut on the iPad Pro during Q3 2020, rather than the MacBook Pro in Q4 2020. Once more Apple’s bias towards the mobile devices shines through, no matter the screen you view it on.

Now read about another key MacBook Pro feature the iPad will be adopting…
