Apple Watch saves Palm Beach County man’s life
OUR TONY VELASQUEZ JUNIOR TALKED TO HIM ABOUT HIS NEW APPRECIATION FOR THE TECHNOLOGY. TONY: 74-YEAR-OLD ROY ROBINSON OF LAKE WORTH CREDITS AN APPLE WATCH LIKE THIS FOR SAVING HIS LIFE. >> SO I RESTED AND DIDN’T THINK ANYTHING OF IT, AND LATER THAT AFTERNOON THE WATCH STARTED BEEPING PROBABLY ABOUT ONCE AN HOUR, ONCE EVERY TWO HOURS SAYING YOU’RE IN A-FIB, AND I HAD NO IDEA WHAT A-FIB WAS. TONY: SO WHEN YOU SEARCH GOOGLE, DID IT SCARE THE HECK OUT OF YOU? >> YES. I WOULD USE A DIFFERENT WORD, BUT YES. TONY: ROY’S WIFE DALE KNEW SOMETHING WAS OFF WHEN THEY VISITED THEIR GRANDDAUGHTER AT SCHOOL. >> SHE WANTED TO SHOW US HER CLASSROOM SO HE WENT UP TO THE 3RD FLOOR. OUT OF BREATH WHEN HE GOT THERE, WHICH IS VERY UNLIKE HIM. HIS WATCH WENT OFF, HIS APPLE WATCH WENT OFF AND SAID, YOU’RE IN A-FIB. >> TOOK ME UP THREE FLIGHTS OF STAIRS TO HER CLASSROOM AND I WAS TOTALLY OUT OF BREATH BY THE TIME I GOT UP THERE, WHICH IS UNUSUAL FOR ME BECAUSE I’M FAIRLY FIT. FINALLY IT STARTED GOING OFF WHILE I WAS LYING ON THE COUCH AND WATCHING TELEVISION, SO AT THAT POINT WE GOT SERIOUS ABOUT IT. TONY: AND WHAT’S THE FIRST THING ROY DID WHEN THE 6TH ALERT WENT OFF? >> SO THE FIRST THINK WE DID WAS FINISH OUR THANKSGIVING DINNER, WE’VE GOTTA GET OUR PRIORITIES RIGHT, AND AFTER DINNER MY SON SAID YOU’RE GOING TO THE HOSPITAL. TONY: SO THEY RUSHED ROY TO JOHN HOPKINS. >> WE SHOWED UP AT THE HOSPITAL AND THEY SAID WHY ARE YOU HERE? I SAID BECAUSE MY WATCH SAYS, AND THEY SAID, YOUR WHAT? MY WATCH SAYS I AM IN A-FIB, SO HE HOOKED ME UP TO THE ELECTRIC CARDIOGRAM AND AFTER ABOUT 30 MINUTES HE SAYS WE’RE ADMITTING YOU. SO I HAD A PARADE OF DOCTORS A INTERNS AND RESIDENTS AND NURSES. HALF OF THEM CAME IN AND SAID I WANT TO SEE THE GUY WHO WAS SAVED BY THE APPLE WATCH. I THINK I WAS A MINI-CELEBRITY IN THE HOSPITAL. >> I THINK IT SAVED HIS LIFE. >> I DON’T KNOW IF IT SAVED MY LIFE, BUT IT SURE AS HELL HELPED. TONY: AND THE BEST PART, A

Apple Watch saves Palm Beach County man’s life
Roy Robinson, 74, of Lake Worth, credits an Apple Watch with saving his life. Robinson was visiting his family in Baltimore when he says he started feeling fatigued. “So I rested and didn’t think anything of it, and later that afternoon, the watch started beeping probably about once an hour, saying, 'You’re in A-fib,' and I had no idea what A-fib was." So he did what many of us do: He Googled it. Robinson’s wife, Dale Robinson, knew something was off when they visited their granddaughter at school. “She wanted to show us her classroom, so he went up to the third floor, and he was out of breath when he got there which is very unlike him. Dale Robinson said her son insisted they go to the emergency room. “My son said you are going to the hospital. Your watch keeps going off and we are going to the hospital.”Fortunately, Roy Robinson son lives less than 2 miles away from Johns Hopkins Hospital.“We showed up at the hospital, and they said, 'Why are you here?' I said, 'Because my watch told me I was in A-fib,' so they hooked me up to the EKG, and after about 30 minutes, he says, 'We’re admitting you.'”The best part of the ordeal for Roy Robinson? Apple CEO Tim Cook sent him a personal email.
