Next year’s so-called iPhone 12 lineup could come with even bigger batteries thanks to brand-new circuitry.

Apple has reportedly teamed up with a new supplier that is manufacturing a battery protection module that’s almost 50% than that in today’s handsets. It will free up precious internal space to allow for larger cells.

Fans and critics have already been blown away by the battery life offered by the iPhone 11 series. It is by far the best yet. But with 5G connectivity on the way next year, Apple must squeeze out even more.

It will do that by using new battery circuitry from South Korea’s ITM Semiconductor, according to a new report.

iPhone 12 to get another battery boost

ITM has already started supplying Apple with battery protection circuits for iPhone, reports Korea’s The Elec. The company is also said to be working with Samsung on the upcoming Galaxy S11.

The new circuits, which are designed to prevent over-charging and over-discharging, are almost 50% smaller than those in previous iPhone models. They measure just 26mm wide as opposed to 50mm.

This reduction will free up precious space for the battery itself, allowing larger cells to be installed. But this doesn’t necessarily mean we’ll get even better battery life from the iPhone 12 lineup.

Apple is expected to introduce new features next year, like 5G, that will require more power. We may end up with the same battery life in the end, then. As long as it doesn’t decrease, iPhone fans should be happy.

New sizes

Recent reports have promised the iPhone 12 lineup will come in new sizes. A smaller 5.4-inch device is expected to replace the 5.8-inch model, and a larger 6.7-inch device could replace the 6.5-inch model.

Reliable TF International Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo predicts there will be four models on offer altogether. All are said to feature OLED screens, but only flagship options will offer three rear-facing cameras.

We can also expect the lineup to pack Apple’s next-generation A14 chip, more RAM, and a redesigned frame.
