Mario Kart Tour's anticipated multiplayer beta goes live
The wait is over.

If you’ve beaten the computer a thousand times on Mario Kart Tour (which, let’s face it, is pretty tough not to do), you can finally pit your Mario and Luigi-steering abilities against other flesh-and-blood players.

That’s because Nintendo has launched the eagerly anticipated multiplayer online beta for Mario Kart Tour. You’ll need to sign up to the Gold Pass to play it, though.

The multiplayer beta comes days after Mario Kart Tour rolled out its final tour of the year. This included a variety of new locations, ranging from historic cities to the iconic rainbow road. There are also new drivers (including Reindeer Yoshi) and new vehicles (including the festive Jingle Bells sleigh).

At present, the multiplayer mode is only available to people who sign up for Mario Kart‘s Gold Pass. At $4.99 per month, that’s quite steep, being on par with Apple Arcade, which offers more than 100 games for the same amount of money. However, if you’ve not signed up to Gold Pass before you do get a 2-week free trial period. The paid subscription will automatically begin at the end of the free trial period.

Alongside multiplayer, Gold Pass subscribers also get access to a super-speedy 200cc mode. In addition, there are some exclusive cosmetics unavailable to non-paying players.

The multiplayer beta runs from now through December 26. Nintendo warns that it may have a few early issues, though. These could include connection fails, game crashes, and more. Once the beta period has finished, Nintendo will likely make multiplayer available as a permanent feature. After that, it seems likely that it will roll out to non-Gold Pass players.
