Several flagship smartphones were released before and after it, but Apple's iPhone XR held its own in 2019.

As 9to5Mac reports, Counterpoint Research estimates that the iPhone XR was the best-selling smartphone in the first three quarters of the year. It's also the most popular iPhone model in every region globally.

Released more than a year ago, the iPhone XR attracted consumers with older smartphones in need of an upgrade, who didn't want to spend more than $1,000. Apple priced the XR at $749, and it still offered high-end specs where performance matters most.

Smartphone sales slowed down in 2018, but Apple adjusted the iPhone XR's price at several points to maintain its momentum.

Still, Samsung dominates in total sales, with midrange devices like Galaxy A10 and the Galaxy A50 leading the pack and helping it stay ahead of popular Chinese competitors, according to Counterpoint Research's report. Here were the best-selling smartphones in Q3 2019:

  1. Apple iPhone XR
  2. Samsung Galaxy A10
  3. Samsung Galaxy A50
  4. Oppo A9
  5. Apple iPhone 11
  6. Oppo A5s
  7. Samsung Galaxy A20
  8. Oppo A5
  9. Xiaomi Redmi A7
  10. Huawei P30

Apple's iPhone 11, which acts as the iPhone XR's spiritual success, landed in the top 10 during the same period, though it was released at the very end of the third quarter. Both that model and the iPhone 11 Pro might climb up the rankings after a few more months of availability.

Even with the iPhone 11 in its lineup, the iPhone XR is still manufactured and sold globally. So it'll be interesting to see how the iPhone XR holds up in the final quarter of 2019 and the early months of 2020. Currently, the iPhone XR can be purchased for as little as $399 with an eligible trade-in.
