IBM is making new form of battery that is so much better than the lithium-ion battery

The evolution of battery has stopped since the commercial release of lithium-ion battery back in 1991. After that, a lot of mining activities are required to get the resources for the production of lithium-ion batteries. Not only is it harmful to the environment, but the batteries have also caused countless explosions as well. Now, the time of lithium-ion batteries might be coming to an end as IBM is making a new form of battery that is better in many ways.

IBM is working with Mercedes-Benz R&D, Sidus, and Central Glass to build a new battery. The new battery is said to be more environmental-friendly compared to other batteries, as its key materials can be extracted from seawater. In contrast, the mining of heavy metals like manganese, cobalt and nickel is needed to produce the lithium-ion batteries.

The researchers have stated that the new battery can be charged up to 80 percent in just five minutes. It is also said to be safer as it has a new liquid electrolyte that has a lower chance of igniting when something goes wrong. On top of that, IBM claimed that the battery can operate for hundreds to thousands of cycles with 80 percent retention of its original capacity.

If you want to know the progress, IBM's materials innovation manager, Young-hye Na, is confident that the battery can reach commercial viability in two years. Let us know what you think about this new form of battery on our Facebook page! For more tech news, stay tuned to TechNave.com.
