A six-year-old boy's adorable reaction to his Christmas present could warm even the grumpiest Grinch's heart.

The Liverpool boy was stunned when he unwrapped a brand new iPhone on Christmas Day.

Max Knowles, from Anfield, dissolved into surprised tears after he unwrapped the Christmas present in front of his family.

His mum posted a video of his reaction which warmed thousands of hearts, as viewers praised little Max's gracious response to the gift.

Upon unwrapping the gift in the video, which has had more than 20,000 reactions on Facebook, Max asks in disbelief: "You got this for me?"

The six-year-old then starts to cry before running to hug his mum to say thank you.

Carli Swift, 30, from Anfield, Max's mum, told the Liverpool ECHO he had 'no idea' he was about to receive an iPhone and that his reaction took her completely by surprise.

She said: "He had no idea. He was so excited when he unwrapped it. He thought it was aftershave when he opened it.

"The thing is he would have been happy with that. He's dead understanding.

"When we went to Liverpool ONE he told me that he'd like an iPhone and we used to just laugh it off. We thought we'd get it to surprise him because we knew he really wanted it.

"He was sobbing when he unwrapped it. I just wasn't expecting that reaction.

"He's such a lovely boy. Everyone who meets him loves him. He's so loved."

Mum Carli said the response to the video took her completely by surprise, with most of the replies being positive.

She said:"Most people have responded positively to it.

"I've had messages saying the video has made their Christmas and that they are so grateful for me sharing it."

Carli also said the video had divided opinions over whether it was right to buy an iPhone for her six-year-old son.

However, she says his usage will be monitored and that he will mainly be using it to play games.

She also rejected accusations that her son was "spoilt", claiming that his reaction says it all.

She added: "All his friends had them. I will be monitoring his use of it all the time. He just wants to use it so he can play games and to speak to me and his dad.

"Some people are saying he's spoiled because of this but he really isn't. His reaction sums it up. He's such a lovely kid.

"I'd say that 80% of responses I've had have been positive and about 20% have been disgusted that I bought him an iPhone. Everyone's entitled to their own opinion.

"It's not like he sits there all day playing it and doesn't move.

"People have said to me 'you should get him toys not a phone' but he had toys as well for Christmas.

"I do understand why people are criticising me but there will be parental controls on the phone."
