Intel To Smash 5GHz Barrier With New 10th Gen Mobile Gaming Processors, New Core i9 Ghost Canyon NUC Teased Too

This article is more than 4 years old.

Intel has announced its new 10th-gen mobile processors will offer speeds in excess of 5GHz for the first time. The yet unnamed H-series CPUs, specifically in the Core i7 range, will offer even faster speeds than the current Core i9-9980HK flagship (which tops out at 5GHz) and new Core i9 mobile processors will be even faster and offer up to eight cores and 16 threads with peak boost speeds well above 5GHz.

Intel currently has an enviable market share of the laptop market, especially with gaming-focused models and with the absence of AMD's 7nm Zen 2 Ryzen CPUs in the mobile device market for the moment, things aren't likely to change, at least in the short term.

The move would see Intel bolster its lightly-threaded performance, which will see it offer better performance in games and productivity workloads, although there's no word on pricing and how affordable laptops offering these processors will be.

Intel also announced its latest addition to its NUC mini computer range - the Ghost Canyon NUC. Including an unlocked Core i9 H-series mobile CPU, it will be the first NUC with the option of installing a discrete graphics card and will also allow end users to upgrade the CPU. The new NUC will come in a much larger case than we've seen with NUCs in the past, with the latest model sitting at five liters.

The Ghost Canyon NUC will offer Core i5, Core i7 and Core i9 CPUs and early photos point at an integrated PSU rather than external power brick as well as dual-slot GPU support. For now, I can only assume that the small case will be limited to super-short PCB graphics cards, but there are plenty of these around and with powerful GPUs from the likes of Nvidia too.
