CES-2020-bug-2Wish your precious iPhone had an airbag to protect it in the event of an accidental drop? Speck’s new line of Presidio2 iPhone cases promises to deliver a solution.

It’s all thanks to its smart “Armor Cloud” protective technology, which use some clever design to keep your pricey phone safe.

“It’s all in the cloud,” Speck notes on its website. “The Presidio2 Armor Cloud that is. The interior of each case is lined with individual air capsules. At impact, these phone-loving-air-pockets compress and suspend your phone on a comfy cushion of air, just like an airbag.”

Speck claims that its cases created with this tech can withstand drops of up to 13 feet. They also have antimicrobial protection to stop stain or odor-causing bacteria. Speck has created several cases in the line. These include the Presidio2 Armor Cloud, Presidio2 Grip, and Presidio2 Pro cases. They will launch early this year. Speck and beyond: An airbag for your iPhone case?

As innovative as the Speck airbag case is, it’s not the first time similar technology has been explored for the iPhone. In 2018, a student from Aalen University in Germany invented something called the AD Case. This prototype case used built-in sensors that detect when a phone is dropping. It then deploys eight springs to actively dampen the fall.

Apple has carried out its own similar experiment. In 2015, it filed a patent application describing retractable drop-proof bumpers that could be built into a future iPhone. If the iPhone detected a drop, the device’s four corners would spring out in a similar way to the AD Case. Apple noted that this could double as a flotation device in case your handset accidentally lands in water.

Until either of these come to market, however, you might be best off with Speck’sPresidio2 iPhone case.
